Description

2012 was Hong Kong Design Year (2012 HKDY). More than two million people have participated in the 63 programmes throughout the HKDY in 2012. The year-long initiative helped to promote creativity and good design of the local design and business communities, and to engage, educate and communicate the value of design as an integral part of the fabric of our city, our economy, culture and living.

We now live in a creative economy, where design and innovation provide the strategic impetus for value creation in both business and society. Characterised by its unique blend of East and West culture, Hong Kong design is also poised to influence the cultural development in Asia in the age of globalisation. 2012 HKDY was an opportune occasion for Hong Kong to showcase its leadership in design talents while advocating for wider awareness of the strategic and catalytic importance of design in the economy, businesses, services and society at large.

Design, We Say is Hong Kong Design Centre’s record of HKDY and an essential part of Hong Kong’s design legacy. Design has never been the sole domain of any elite group — it belongs to society at large with far-reaching influences. Design is used to enrich lives and improve communities. To put it simply, design is part of our daily living.

Part 1 of this book, “What is Design?” shows that design has always been an integral part of Hong Kong and examines how Hong Kong’s design world and industrial sector contributed to the city’s success.

In Part 2, “Design in Action”, we witness how Hong Kong’s pragmatic and lively attitude to life allow us to meld Eastern traditions with Western influences and develop our Hong Kong Style.

In Part 3, “Designer Within”, the focus shifts to how the local creative community adapts to market trends and future needs of Hong Kong.

In Part 4, “Design Directions”, we focus on what needs to be done after 2012 HKDY and HKDC’s hopes for the future.

Before design can bring any tangible and substantial gains, we must regard design as a significant investment in our future. It must never be viewed a cost on society. Design, we believe, is our thinking, our living, our culture, our economy, our city and our future.
