Memory is a multi-layered process of connection, disconnection and reconnection ─ (re-)connecting to/ disconnecting from not only one’s personal past but also family history and spatial landscape. Entering into her elderly mother’s lost memory space, returning to the old district where she spent her childhood, the artist looks around in the city and finds things not entirely familiar.
The symptoms that result from the development of collective hysteria led her to contemplate existence and essence. Her lens gently plays over the passage of time, inadvertently leaving irreparable lacunae in the image.
Blackness ─ a feeling of mysterious suspense, hovers between the individual and the collective, between remembering and forgetting, and between the past and the present. The project undertakes visual experimentation via the mobile phone, featuring the effects of blackness and distortion in a panoramic format in a most original way.
The operation is strictly straight photography without post-production. (The book, which traverses art photography, writing and sociology, has received several international awards including Bronze Prize (Fine Art), Honorable Mention (Fine Art) and Honorable Mention (Book) respectively in Tokyo International Foto Awards 2017, International Photography Awards 2017 (USA) and Prix de la Photographie 2018.)
